An Empirical Analysis of the Predictors of Workplace Absenteeism among Employees in Some Selected Organizations
Abstract:
The phenomenon of absenteeism is one that cuts across small and large, public and private organizations. It has become a concern for both employee and employers alike. This study attempted to identify predictors of absenteeism among employees by obtaining data from two hundred and four (204) employees of both private and public organizations in Ogun and Lagos states. A survey design was utilised for data collection. The result revealed a significant positive relationship between work stress and absenteeism, (r = .16; p <.05); and between extroversion and absenteeism, (r = .18, p <.05). However, it was observed that there was no relationship between the core job characteristics and absenteeism except the dimension of skill variety where a significant and positive relationship was found (r = .18, p <.05). From the findings of the result, it was noted that there was a joint prediction of absenteeism by work stress, extroversion and job characteristics, F (7, 192) = 2.94, p <.05. The independent prediction of absenteeism was significant only for work stress (β = .10, p <.05), extroversion (β = .16, p <.05), and skill variety (β = .17, p <.05). It was also, observed that work stress interacted with skill variety to influence absenteeism, F (1,200) = 9.29, p < .01. These results clearly indicate that work stress, extroversion trait and the skill variety dimension of job characteristics are valid and important predictors of absenteeism among employees. These findings were discussed and suggestions on how to handle this negative workplace behaviour were proffered. ORDER COMPLETE MATERIAL FROM CHAPTER 1-5
