Development of a Framework for the Use of E-Learning in Teaching Industrial Technical Education in Nigerian Universities

Abstract:

Today, more and more countries are moving towards a knowledge-based economy. In such economies, the workforce must be capable of learning continually, be familiar with the techniques of accessing and processing information and possess excellent communication skills. Six research questions and six hypotheses were posed to guide the study. The study adopted a survey research design. A questionnaire containing 111 items was developed and used for the study. Experts subjected the instrument to face validation. Data from the administration of the questionnaire was analyzed using mean, standard deviation and ANOVA statistics. The instrument was pilot tested on a sample of 18 randomly selected industrial technical lecturers, ICT experts and university administrators. The reliability coefficient of the instrument was found to be 0.7541 using the Cronbach alpha coefficient. Eight major findings were made among which was that all the 111 items of the questionnaire were considered important and desirable for the development of a framework for the use of e-Learning in teaching industrial technical education Nigerian universities. Based on the findings of the study, conclusions were drawn and recommendations proffered. The findings from the study which included infrastructure required for e-Learning, access to the required infrastructure, uses of e-Learning, skills required for use of e-Learning, factors that can hinder the use of e-Learning and policy strategies were then used to develop a framework for the use of e-Learning in teaching industrial technical education in Nigeria universities.
