ABSTRACT
This study was a histor ical survey of determinants of bank distress
in Nigeria. The research populat ion comprised banks operat ing in Niger ia
between 1998 and 2004. Data used in the study were al l observat ional
panel data obtained f rom the publ ished accounts of the elements of the
research populat ion. A total of 113 complete bank observat ions were
ut i l ized in the study.
The researcher visi ted the Nigerian Deposi t Insurance
Corporat ion (NDIC) , the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Chartered
Inst i tute of Bankers of Niger ia (CIBN) and the Financial Inst i tut ions
Training Cent re (FITC) to obtain the data uti l ized in the study.
The relat ionships out l ined by the data set were empirical ly analyzed
via mul t iple regress ion tests. Al l the data for the purpose of the study
were manually computed and then cal ibrated into the SPSS regression
module for extensive stat ist ical analysis. The empirical resul ts indicated
that loan qual i ty is a signif icant determinant of bank dist ress in Nigeria,
whi le insider lending and extent of government ownership are insignif icant .
