Abstract:
The objective of this study was to compare the effect of Media and expository methods of teaching mathematics on the achievement, retention and interest of Senior Secondary School ( SSS ) students in Ondo State, Five research questions and five research Hypothesis were formulated for the study, Two validated research instruments and two lesson plans were used, There were two experimental groups and one control group in each of the twelve schools used, There were 144 subjects for the study. The research instruments and lesson plans which were validated were administered., to the subjects, The data obtained from the administration of the instruments were summarized and analysed using mean scores, standard deviations, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA), The following major findings were obtained : 1 Expository method of teaching mathematics is better Than the media method at the SSS level, 2. Student taught by expository method are able to retain more than those taught by media method,, 3, Male mathematics teachers are more competent in the use of the expository method than their female counterparts, 4, Male students perform better in mathematics than female students regardless of the method used, 5 Students taught mathematics by expository method show more interest in the subject than those taught by media method, Based on these findings, it is recommended that teacher training tertiary institutions should include expository method in their curricula,
