Abstract:
Igbo hunting poetry must have been the oldest poetry in igboland . Our claim is informed by the fact that hunting was the first, and for long remained the only occupation of man.Following from there,we hold the view that Igbo hunting poetry was the source of Igbo praise and heroic poetry. As hunting was inherently full of risk, Igbo hunting poetry provided a means whereby the hunter came into terms with supernatural powers, whose alliances he needed. He not only chanted to evoke gods, he also sang to praise himself and to comment on things around him.On the whole therefore,Igbo hunting poetry presents us with an evocative force of style, a passionate instruction ,and a steady insight into our secular and ritual mileux. It sweeps every thing before it, it gives us the happiness that only great rigour inspires.Chapter one is the introductory part. It states the objectives,cope and limitations.In addition it highlights the historical and social back ground of the study; the provenance and evolution of hunting poetry .Finally,the last part of this chapter is the literature review.Chapter two probes the context and performance, taking a serious look at the totality of the audience, the environment, and other natural factors that could influence the performances.Chapter three analyses
