Influence of Parents’ Educational Level, Type of School and Gender On Adolescents’ Social Competence in Uyo

Abstract:

This study investigated the influence of parent education, locality of school and gender on adolescent’s social competence. Eight hundred and eighty-two (882) respondents 431 boys and 451 girls participated in the study with a mean age of 15.5 and SD = 3.8. Questionnaires which measured social competence, parent’s education, locality of school and gender were administered. The study adopted a cross sectional survey design and three way Analysis of Variance (3-way ANOVA). Three hypotheses were tested in the study. The first hypothesis which stated that there would be no statistically significant influence of parent’s education on adolescent social competence was rejected F (1,874) = 7.57, <.05. The second hypothesis which stated that there will be no statistically significant influence of locality on adolescents social competence was confirmed F (1,874), =.65, >.05. However, the third hypothesis which stated that there would be no significant influence of gender on adolescence social competence was accepted F (1, 874) =.16, >.05. The results were discussed in line with the findings and appropriate recommendations were made.
