Leadership and Organisational Performance (A Case Study of State Primary Education Board, Kogi State

Abstract:

The study is an empirical attempt at discussing the problems implicit in the concept of leadership and its operations in human organizations. There is no organization that can survive for a long time without proper leadership and management. Leadership is, therefore, so pivotal in organizational discourse that most scholars have come to an agreement that the quality of leadership determines the quality of organizational performance. However, leadership in most organizations are usually found wanting and performing below expectations which in turn adversely affect organizational performance. A case in point is the State Primary Education Board, Kogi State where organizational performance has been alleged to be inefficient, an attribution of incompetent leadership. This research is, therefore being informed by our cognizance of the leadership incapacitations in the Board, and the quest to attempt an exposition of it causes, as well as to proffer probable solutions to ameliorate this organizational problems. Some of the major findings of the study was faulty recruitment style, disruption of the organizational structure, indiscriminate victimization of staff which were also responsible for the staff’s not living up to expectation and performing below standard in the organization.Obviously, in the prevailing leadership crisis, findings were spotted and subsequently solutions/recommendations were proffered.
