Manpower Planning and Development in the Nigerian Banking Sector: A Case Study of Oceanic Bank Plc Nsukka Branch

Abstract:

This research work assesses the manpower planning and development in the Nigerian banking sector using of Oceanic Bank Plc Nsukka Branch as a case study. The study contends that manpower is a fundamental organizational resource which needs to be properly planned, trained and developed in order to enable the achievement of organizational goals. The data used in this study were collected from both primary and secondary sources. The primary method or sources of data collection included the use of a research instrument (the questionnaire) and oral interview. Some research questions were asked as guide to the respondents in order to elicit first hand information on the subject matter. The questionnaire contained twenty four structured questions designed in both open and close ended style. In addition, the questionnaire was validated and administered accordingly. Secondary sources of data collection on the other hand, included textbooks, journals, annual reports and documents of Oceanic Bank Plc and internet materials. The study formulated three hypotheses to guide the data analysis using simple percentage, tables and chi-square statistical methods for data analysis. The data analysis revealed the following findings: There is the effective manpower planning and development in Oceanic Bank. There is the evidence of engagement of staff in training and development programmes in Oceanic Bank Plc. Oceanic Bank adopts long-term manpower planning as well as different manpower training and development approaches in its human resource management. Training as we observed improves the productivity and performance of workers in service delivery. Staff training and development programmes are beneficial to both Oceanic Bank and workers. Financial inadequacy affects staff planning and development programmes of Oceanic Bank Plc. Based on the above findings, the study recommended that manpower planning in Oceanic Bank should be more effective in order to attain the human resource objectives of the Bank. Again, staff training and development programmes of Oceanic Bank should be enhanced by the management in order to improve service delivery of the workers.
