Public Relations Activities of Petro-Chemical Companies in Nigeria: A Study of Shell and Mobil

Abstract:

This study investigated the public relations activities of the upstream sector of the Nigerian oil-industry. Shell Petroleum Development Company, the biggest oil producer in Nigeria and Exonmobil (Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited) the biggest oil company in the world were picked as case study. The primary objective was to carry out a public relations audit on these two giants in the oil producing business in Nigeria. A review of relevant literature enabled the researcher to draw up a questionnaire used in the collection of data. As knowledge does not exist in a vacuum, the researcher naturally anchored the research questions on the relevant theories. The research employed the use of primary data - questionnaire and oral interview using stratified random sampling as survey techniques to collect data. The researcher went to the corporate headquarters of these companies in Lagos as well as the regional offices in Port Harcourt, Eket and Warri for primary data collection. The data were analyzed using appropriate statistical tools like the Spearman S coefficient of correlation and the chi-square to analyze the relationship between the result obtained and the research questions and hypothesis. Conclusion emerged drawn from the results obtained and appropriate recommendations were made.
