Recruitment and Selection in Public Organizations In Nigeria: A Case Study of University of Nigeria, Nsukka

Abstract:

The study examined recruitment and selection in public organizations in Nigeria with a focus on University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The fundamental problems of recruitment and selection in public organizations in Nigeria which also affects recruitment and selection exercise in University of Nigeria were identified and addressed. The problem of the study, therefore was how to isolate the very problems among the identified problems of selection and recruitment in public organization that predominantly distort the formal principles of recruitment and selection in University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Both primary and secondary sources were used for data generation. The secondary source of data, were generated via published and unpublished materials while that of the primary data were generated through questionnaire dispersed to three categories of respondents (Administrative staff of UNN, New employees of the University and applicants). Among the major findings made includes: tribalism, “Ima Mmadu” (IM) otherwise refered to as African behaviour in public organization or cognitive melodrama, bureaucratic godfatherism etc. As a redress, biannual inter-departmental/faculty transfer of university staff, endowment test, formation of recruitment and selection committee for the university are the major recommendations of this research.
