Terminology Planning in Nigerian Languages: A Case Study of the Hausa Language

Abstract:

Terminology planning as an aspect of language planning, is an important phenomenon in the the study of linguistics. While terminilogy planning deals mostly with term, with the aim of promoting a particular language, language planning (as a social process) is useful in clarifying some of the processes leading policy formulation and implementation the society requires linguistically. Language planning goes alongside solving some of the problems of language.Nigeria a country with different ethnic groups ,is faced with a lot of linguistic problem .These problem e.g.Lack of indigenous language as lingua franca, misunderstanding between majority and minority language speakers, etc. need urgent and long lasting solution. It,is the aim of this study therefore, to find out ways, through terminology planning in particular and language planning In general, in Nigerian language, with particular reference to Hausa, in which some of these Nigerien 1inguitic problems could be solved. Tho study, reviewing some related literature using secondary data, discussed such areas as language planning, relationship between language planning and terminology planning, issues in terminology planning, terminology planning in Nigerian language, terminology planning in Hausa etc, Sources of terminology in Hausa, i.e. occupations, borrowing and coining are all discussed in the study.The study also examined the types and users terminologies in Hausa. In the end, some recommendations were given, which the researcher feels could help in improving the study of terminology planning in Hausa,in particular, and Nigerian language in general.
