Abstract:
For sometime now, campus cults have been a thorn in the flesh of the government, university authorities parents, students and the society at large. Acknowledging how powerful the press is, this research found out the role it has played between (1990 and 1994) is the campaign to eradicate secret cults in Nigeria universities. In view of this, the research sought answers to four research questions about why students join secret cults, the activities of these cults, why the issue should be viewed seriously and of course the role of the press in the campaign to eradicate secret cults in Nigeria universities. Furthermore, the contents of one magazine (The Newswatch) and one daily newspaper (National Concord) were analysed qualitatively. There were 27 articles on the whole. The related literature was based on the social responsibility of the press. The research revealed that the press has not contributed much in eradicating secret cults in Nigeria universities. Based on the findings, recommendation were made. It was recommended that the government, university authorities, students, parents and the society at large should co-operate with the press in this crucial campaign.
