EFFECT OF SINGLE PARENTHOOD ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE A CASE STUDY OF OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE
ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to determine the extent to which single parenthood has affected students academically and psychologically in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
The researcher was able to find out that single parenthood has really affected most students academically and psychologically through the use of questionnaire.
From the findings, it was discovered that the causes of single parent that is mostly rampant is divorce, and students who are from a single home lack parental interaction, they are deprived from peer group play, feel depressed whenever they are with their co-students with two parents.
It was also discovered that single parents’ children do help their parent financially in one way or the other and they also absent themselves from school. Teachers also told the researcher that students are unable to buy all their English textbook and they also absent themselves from school.
Suggestions were also made due to the findings of this project that single parent should try their best to show concern about their children academic work.
