“STAFF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT IN PUBLIC SECTOR A CASE STUDY OF EDO BROADCASTING SERVICES IN BENIN CITY”.
ABSTRACT
This research work examined and focused on staff training and development in public sector, a case study of Edo Broadcasting Service Benin City, Edo State.
The study was based on the hypotheses that staff training and development improves job performance of staff of well as motivates them for effective performance.
In order to generate data for the study, the survey design was used in which 60 respondents were sampled and structured questionnaire was employed in gathering data for the study.
The data were properly analysed in chapter four, using simple percentages. The findings include: that Edo Broadcasting service hardly sends staff for training programmes and if they do it, its not a regular exercise, hence job performance is poor Also, most of the staff that have gone for training confirm that it motivates them for better performance on their job. From the data analysed, most of the respondents confirms that the Edo Broadcasting service Benin City do not have a training policy
hence, trainings are done haphazardly and the consequences have had negative impact on their job performance etc. On the basis of these findings, certain recommendations were
made as follows:
1. Edo Broadcasting service management should be aware that training and development are indispensable factor in any organisation.
2. Adequate finance should be devoted to its budget for continuous relevant development and training of its staff
3. A properly written and widely circulated training policy should be put in place to create awareness to staff on training and development programmes.
4. The elimination of American favouritism and making training very compulsory for both old and newly employed staff.
