TERTIARY MUSIC EDUCATION IN NIGERIA: ITS CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE.
ABSTRACT
This study traces the tertiary music education in Nigeria from its origins to the present day and clarifies how certain ideas and practices in Nigeria music education have originated. The study
includes the discussion of the major problems facing tertiary music education in Edo State, Egor Local Government in particular.
The study investigates the development of tertiary music education, policies and curriculum planning since Nigeria independence in 1960. It also examines its current state, ideology of the Nigerian towards tertiary education. Also this study provides an overview of the challenges facing tertiary music education including musical scholars, a shortage of qualified music educationalist, and inappropriateness of imported music curriculum to the Nigerian society.
