THE PROBLEMS OF REVENUEGENERATIONIN THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ADMINISTRATION (A CASE STUDY OF OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL, EDO STATE).
ABSTRACT
Revenue is crucial to the existence of any organization, being that a corporate organization, government parastatal or ministry. In the same vein, the 774 local government councils in Nigeria require funds to discharge its assigned constitutional responsibilities.
Economic viability is one of the pre-requisite for the creation of a local government. Unfortunately, many of the local governments in Nigeria have been tied to the apron string of the allocation from Federation Account, without which many of them cannot even pay staff salaries left alone executing people oriented projects. Consequently, I decided to carry out a study to unveil why this absurd situation has been the order of the day with local government administration in the country.
To get relevant data on this subject “problems of Revenue Generation in the Local Government Administration”, questionnaires and personal interviews were conducted. The responses indicate that, among other things, corruption by council officials, lack of up-to-date bye-laws on tariff and use of revenue mobilization agents, have adversely affected the revenue generation efforts of the local government. Oredo Local Government, as a metropolitan council in the country, was used as a case
study, and the findings were quite revealing. In this research study, efforts have been made to identify the reasons militating against poor internal revenue generation by Local government councils, conclusions were reached and recommendations for improvement proffered. Thus, it will be worth the while buying out time to keep yourself abreast with current happenings in the local government
councils and such knowledge can, indeed, be invaluable to you and all.
This modest research work can be a springboard for further work byscholars interested in the runnings of the finances of local governments inwhichever country they may be living.
