Abstract
Almajiri school system has been practiced in Nigeria as far back as the pre-colonial period and has been associated with different problems, various governments, donor agencies as well as other corporate bodies both national and international have made several attempts geared towards addressing these problems. This study appraised the Almajiri school system and analysed its implication to urban management. Data were generated through interviews, field surveys with Alarammas, pupils as well as the institutions involved. The study adopted cluster sampling of the area in which a sample of 250 respondents was drawn there by representing 12.5% of the total population. The study revealed that the implication of Almajiri school system is that of land use planning and management, provision of basic urban social services, sanitary issues and poor housing conditions. Base on the finding of the study it is recommended that the environmental quality should be improved, spatial distribution pattern should be regulated, economic and socio cultural activities should be closely monitored and addressed to achieve a sustainable urban management and development.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Adequate provisioning of basic urban social services is a function of effective urban administration and management. Where these facilities and services are not supplied through or by the urban management mechanisms, they pose serious implications in form of social, economic, physical and environmental breakdown. This further constrains effective urban management system of the city. Formal and informal educational systems are important components of the socio-cultural fabric that ensures harmonious development of the city. The Almajiri School is a type of informal educational system which has become an important component of the social fabric of towns and cities in the Northern parts of Nigeria. It takes place mostly in town centers as well as peri-urban areas. The system emerged organically taking important areas of our cities; such as the urban fringes and city centers. These areas have become an issue to the administration and management of cities in the country. This is evident in the problems posed by the educational system in towns and cities which includes street begging, traffic hold ups, youth violence, crime, juvenile delinquency, theft and robbery. It has taken a prominent place in the issues of public health problems (epidemic outbreak); urban sprawl and squalor coupled with overcrowding in space among others. These have prompted many state governments such as Kano, Sokoto, Zamfara and Borno to set up agencies and departments to formulate policies that seek to organize, regulate and formalize the system and also to provide possible solutions to the problems.
