Housing Tenure in Informal Settlements: a case study of Ayobo, Lagos.
Abstract:
The study investigated tenure structure in Ayobo, an informal settlement located at the outskirts of Lagos. Objectives of the study included to examine the socio-economic, demographic and cultural characteristics of residents; examine the housing tenure structure in the study area; identify factors which determine household tenure choice in the study area; define the processes of accessing housing by households in different tenure arrangements; examine the characteristics of houses in the study area and examine the relationship between the socio-economic characteristics, tenure choice and the factors which determine tenure choice of respondents. The study was presented in seven chapters. Chapter one was the introductory chapter which covered among other things the background and justification for the study; research questions; aim and objectives. Chapter two covered the summary of the reviewed literature and the conceptual framework evolved for the study. A thorough literature review provided the background for the study. In addition to ssisting in design of the research, it also helped in identifying relevant theories and concepts. It further guided the development of a conceptual framework for the study. A detailed description of the methodology adopted for the study was presented in chapter three. Findings of the study were presented and discussed in chapters four to six. Chapter four covered the personal characteristics of respondents; chapter five examined the characteristics of their housing and the processes adopted in accessing the housing and chapter six focused on tenure structure in the study area and the factors that influenced it.
