Survey and Documentation of Local Resources for Teaching Secondary School Geography: Implications for Environmental Education

Abstract:

This study sought to survey and document the local resources used for teaching environmental education elements in secondary school geography. The purpose of the study, therefore, was apart from surveying and documenting the local resources for geographical education, ascertaining the frequency of use of the local resources and identifying the problems teachers encounter in using the resources for School geography. Three research questions were generated. Focus Group Discussion [FGD] technique, visitation, photographing and manual recording were used for data collection. The population of the study included I7 geography teachers, 10% of final year geography students selected through systematic sampling in all the 14 secondary schools in the area of study and purposive sample of 25 resource persons in the schools communities. The identified data in research question one were documented with photographs, while those on research questions two and three were analysed using frequencies and percentages. The study found that apart from textbooks, the numerous local resources in the area of study were not being used by the teachers. Identified problems inhibiting the use of local resources include lack of enough qualified geography teachers, and lack of time periods of geography on the time table, among others. Associated recommendations made were among others the appointment of more qualified geography teachers and the provision of more time and periods for geography in the schools' time table.
