Utilization of Learning Materials in the Distance Education Programmes of Our Saviour Institute of Science Agriculture and Technology (Osisatech) Enugu

Abstract:

This research work was aimed at examining the utilization of the learning materials used in Distance Education Programmes of Our Saviour Institute of Science, Agriculture and Technology (OSISATECH), Enugu. To guide the study, four (4) Research Questions and two (2) Null hypotheses were formulated and tested. Also, this study reviewed some literature related to the work. Case Study Method was used for the Design of the study. The population for the study is three hundred and two (302) drawn from the students in Ordinary National Diploma, Nigerian Certificate in Education and Higher National Diploma Programmes of Distance and Continuing Education in OSISATECH, Enugu. Questionnaire was the major instrument used for data collection. It was validated, and its reliability was also established before it was finally administered. The data collected were analysed by using simple percentages and frequencies; by computing and comparing the mean scores, and by the use of t-test statistics. Among the major findings of the study are: 1.That the major learning materials that are used in Distance Education Programme are textbooks, serialized handouts and computers. 2.That the major problems that affect the use of learning materials in Distance Education Programme are undue delay in the distribution of the leaarning materials, lack of regular supply of electricity and poor telephone reception due to poor network services. Based on the results of the study, recommendations were proffered. Some of them are: I.That the federal government should promulgate The National Policy On Distance Education through which the objectives and orderly development of Distance Education with its associated technologies would be promoted 2. That OSISATECH, Eungu and other institutions that are involved in Distance Education Programmes should create learning resource centres in all the study centers. 3. That OSISATECH, Enugu and other institutions that are engaged in Distance Education Programmes should improve on their level of provision of learning materials. Finally, suggestions for further research were made.
